A case involving alleged long-term abuse between students at the prestigious Los Angeles private school, Harvard-Westlake, has drawn widespread attention after details surfaced through a lawsuit and juvenile court proceedings.
According to the lawsuit, the alleged victim, identified as Aidan Romain, said the abuse began in August 2022 during his first water polo practice when he was 14 years old.
Romain claims teammate Lucca van der Woude targeted him during practice in the pool and again later that same day, while also directing racist harassment toward him, including repeatedly using the N-word.
The lawsuit alleges the abuse continued for about 16 months.
Romain reportedly did not tell his parents what was happening because he was afraid, and they only learned about the situation after detectives contacted the family during an investigation.
Authorities later arrested van der Woude on campus in February 2024 after another parent reportedly alerted police to similar allegations.
The case was handled in juvenile court, where van der Woude ultimately pleaded guilty to a charge related to s*xual pen*tration involving a foreign object and was ordered to complete probation as part of a plea agreement.
The outcome of the case sparked strong reactions online, with many questioning whether probation was an adequate consequence.
One commenter wrote,
“All he got was probation? And we wonder why abuse is such a huge problem, there’s no real consequence.”
Others pointed to the disturbing mix of racist harassment and abuse described in the allegations.
Some also expressed sympathy for the victim, with one person writing that the guilty plea suggests the situation may have been even worse and hoping the victim is able to find healing.
