Man pleads guilty in Virginia Walmart credit card skimming case

Florin Doroiman, who was charged with placing credit card skimming devices at several Walmart locations across Virginia, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Lynchburg court to credit card theft and distributing evidence obtained from a card skimming device. The court sentenced him to 10 months of active jail time.

The case began in February after employees at the Wards Road Walmart discovered a card skimmer attached to a card reader. According to the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, surveillance video showed Doroiman installing the skimmer while the cashier was distracted. Investigators said the devices collected credit card information and transmitted the data through Bluetooth.

Prosecutors said Doroiman told law enforcement that a man offered to pay him $200 for each skimming device he installed.

Lynchburg Commonwealth’s Attorney Bethany Harrison said the U.S. Secret Service, which handled the investigation, did not provide more than 1,000 pages of reports until last month.

“The federal government denied the Commonwealth’s request to use one of their investigative agents as an expert witness for trial,” Harrison said. “With these limitations in our evidence and with the limits of speedy trial we had left, we reached this agreement.”

Doroiman continues to face card skimming charges in other localities. Harrison said that in Amherst County, he was sentenced without any active jail time, while in Bedford County, he received a seven-month sentence.

In Danville, the Commonwealth entered a nolle prosequi, meaning the case is not being prosecuted at this time, though officials said it could be investigated further. Doroiman also has pending charges in Halifax County, Colonial Heights, and Hanover County.
