Man Sentenced to 7.5 Years for Violent Attack on Ex-Girlfriend at St. Olaf College Party

On This Post

A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for attacking his ex-girlfriendĀ during a college party at St. Olaf College more than three years ago.

William Schulenberg was convicted of first-degree assault and three counts of second-degree assault for the May 1, 2022, attack.

According to court records, Schulenberg climbed through a window into a dorm party on the Northfield campus and assaulted the victim with a knife and a hammer. He struck her in the head and stabbed her multiple times before three bystanders intervened. Prosecutors say Schulenberg also hit two of the rescuers with the hammer and cut a third person with the knife.

St. Olaf College had previously issued a no-contact order requiring Schulenberg to stay away from the victim. The host of the party told investigators they specifically warned Schulenberg not to come because his ex-girlfriend would be present.

Schulenberg later admitted to investigators that he went to the party with the intent to harm his ex-girlfriend.
