Monticello Deputy Shoots Man Armed with Knife, Sheriff’s Office Says

A Monticello deputy shot a man armed with a large knife Tuesday night, according to the Wright County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said another deputy attempted to subdue the man with a Taser before the shooting. The man was transported to a hospital in stable condition. The deputies involved were not injured and have been placed on critical incident leave pending the investigation.

The incident began shortly before 9 p.m. when a 911 caller reported a male yelling and carrying a knife on the 900 block of Golf Course Road. Deputies said the man ignored commands to drop the weapon, prompting the Taser deployment followed by the firearm discharge.

The deputies were wearing activated body cameras during the encounter. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation.
