Motorist fleeing officer killed in crash near St. Cloud State University campus, police say

Police in St. Cloud, Minnesota, say a 41-year-old man died late Monday night after he crashed while fleeing an officer on a university campus, also injuring another man.

The officer first saw the driver around 10:41 p.m. heading west on University Drive near Killian Boulevard at 62 mph in a 30 mph zone and began a pursuit.

The driver continued west across the Mississippi River on University Bridge, and police said “the officer immediately attempted to terminate the pursuit.”

He then entered the roundabout at Fifth Avenue South in the wrong direction, just northwest of Halenbeck Hall on the St. Cloud State University campus. He collided with a parked vehicle and then struck a light pole in an apartment building parking lot.

Police say the driver died at the scene. The man sitting in the parked car suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police do not yet know why the driver fled, but said his “driving status was canceled … due to past driving conduct.” He will be identified later.

The Minnesota State Patrol is helping with the investigation.
