A historic building in Lynchburg sustained major damage in a fire on Friday evening.

The Lynchburg Fire Department (LFD) received a call for a fire at the Cottage Stillroom & Beeswax Candle Factory on Cabell Street shortly before 5:50 p.m., according to electronic correspondence with the department.

LFD said the fire was considered to be under control at 7:30 p.m., but crews remained on scene throughout the night. One person suffered a minor injury because of the fire. They were not transported to a hospital.

LFD has suggested the building may be salvageable, but the interior was heavily damaged. According to LFD the fire may have been caused by an accident in the facility’s manufacturing process, but the fire marshal is currently investigating the incident.

The Cottage Stillroom was founded in 1981, and moved into its Cabell St. location in 1991. The building was constructed “around 1878,” according to the company’s website.
