The Brookneal Lions Club presented the 19th annual Brookneal Lions Citizenship Award on Thursday, July 8, 2021, to Leonard Wood (Woody) Dickerson of Brookneal, Virginia. Woody is a long-time resident of Brookneal and a 46-year member of the Brookneal Rescue Squad. He noted that he first joined Citizens Rescue Squad in Gladys, Virginia, in 1968. A few years later, Woody was a charter member of the Brookneal Rescue Squad and assisted in the delivery of at least 7 babies in his years of service to the Brookneal Community.

Woody is involved with Falling River Baptist Church and was accompanied to the award presentation by numerous family members. For once in his life Woody was speechless.

Woody was presented a plaque in recognition of his community service, and a two-hundred-dollar donation in his honor was made to the Staunton River Masonic Lodge.

The Brookneal Lions expressed that they hope the community will congratulate Woody for his achievement. He has dedicated much time to helping others, and the Brookneal Lions are thankful for his service. Woody was selected from among several well-qualified nominations.

The Brookneal Lions Club Citizenship Award was established to recognize a local citizen who has demonstrated qualities of outstanding citizenship to Brookneal and the surrounding communities.  This citizen must be a resident of Brookneal or Campbell, Halifax, or Charlotte Counties. Previous recipients include Mr. Carroll Holt, Mrs. Marie Harper, Mr. Donnie Bomar, Mrs. Carolyn Lusardi, Dr. John Campbell, Mrs. Ruby Jennings, Mr. William Guthrie, Mr. Herman Ginther, Mr. Mark Wilkes, Mr. Roger Vassar, Mr. Lee Booker, Mr. Gary Colbert, Mayor Phyllis Campbell, Mrs. Joan Hines, Mr. Jimmy Harper, Mrs. Meg Tibbs, and Mr. Clarence H. Jones Jr.

The Brookneal Lions Club says that its members look forward to recognizing another local citizen to receive this most deserving award in the spring of 2022.

The Brookneal Lions Club’s motto is “We Serve.” The club welcomes new members who would want to follow in Woody’s shoes in serving our community. Those interested in joining should contact any local Lion to inquire about membership.
