Fans of country music may be excited to know 246 The Main Theatre in Brookneal will be staging “Always… Patsy Cline,” a show about famous country singer and Virginia native Patsy Cline.
Executive and artistic director Donnalynn Davis said the show’s two leads bring the story to life.
“The two gals that we've got in the show are outstanding. The girl who plays Patsy Cline, her voice is almost identical to Patsy Cline’s and she favors Patsy,” Davis said. “But the real kicker is the gal who plays Louise. She is so funny, Teresa Sheppard is just a hilarious individual.”
The show, directed by Kathy Fraley, tells the story of Patsy Cline, played by Cecil Hazelwood and one of her fans, Louise Seger. It includes 27 of Cline’s songs and traces her career starting in 1957 to places like the Grand Ole Opry and the Esquire ballroom. Despite Cline’s death in a plane crash in 1963, according to Davis the show ends on a high note.
The show will also feature a live band of Lynchburg musicians Everett Goldwin on piano, Eric Hollandsworth on drums, Caleb Gordon on bass and Liberty University student Jacob Lewis on fiddle. Halifax County ninth-grader Cameron Crews will also be on piano for the show.
“They’re doing a really bang-up job,” Davis said about the band. “It’s the first time we’ve ever had a live band in a musical.”
Hanmer and Barbara Martin make up the rest of the show’s cast. Carl Davis is the show’s lighting and sound technician and Donnalynn Davis is its costume and set designer. Jeaneen Abbot is in charge of the show’s props and stage crew.
Davis said the theatre has been careful to insure guests have a safe viewing experience despite the pandemic, and that she is excited for the theatre to continue offering shows to give local residents something to do.
“We just don't want to give up,” Davis said. “Lots of businesses are going down around town and around the nation. But we are determined that we're going to stay here for our town because we love it here.”
