A domestic call in Osage County ended in gunfire Saturday morning, leaving one man dead and multiple law enforcement officers injured.
Four officers — three Osage County sheriff’s deputies and one Kansas Highway Patrol trooper — were shot while responding to the incident. The Kansas Highway Patrol confirmed that all four officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Kansas Bureau of Investigation spokesperson Melissa Underwood said the shooting happened at a rural residence south of Topeka.
KBI Director Tony Mattivi said the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Stephen McMillan, was shot and killed at the scene.
“After being on scene for less than 10 minutes, gunfire erupted,” Kansas Highway Patrol Superintendent Erik Smith said. “The suspect died from injuries he received from a gunshot wound.”
A second male civilian was also wounded, but authorities say his condition has stabilized.
Officials confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
“Multiple, multiple law enforcement agencies responded immediately when the call went out,” Mattivi said. “We want to thank all of those departments for their assistance.”
