Pittsylvania County officials seized 68 dogs April 12 from a residence on Peninsula Place in Hurt.
Armed with a search warrant, animal control officers observed more than 60 dogs in the house. There were male and female dogs of a variety of breeds and ages. Many of the dogs appeared to be in poor condition. A veterinarian was also on-site at the time of the search to initially evaluate the dogs.
It was determined that the condition of the animals warranted the seizure of the 68 dogs for further evaluation and care. This is an ongoing criminal investigation and no other information can be released at this time. Animal control officers are in discussions with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office and charges are pending against the owner of the dogs.
The Pittsylvania Pet Center is currently closed to the public as the staff assists with this matter.
