The New Jersey bar and nightlife community is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved figures.
Dave Quisumbing, a familiar face behind the bar and a man known for his infectious smile and unmatched energy, has passed away, leaving behind a wave of heartbreak among the many lives he touched.
News of his passing spread quickly through social media, where friends, coworkers, and regulars flooded comment sections and timelines with tributes that painted a picture of a man who was more than just a bartender.
He was a brother, a friend, and someone who made every room feel a little warmer the moment he walked in.
Dave was rooted in Carteret, New Jersey, and most recently called Eatontown home. His career took him through some of the most well-known spots along the Jersey Shore and beyond, including stints at Porta, a popular bar and restaurant destination.
He also had deep ties to Bar A, one of the most iconic shore bars in the state, where he became a staple presence that regulars looked forward to seeing every summer season.
Those who knew him personally speak about him in ways that go far beyond the job. Sami Torres, a friend who shared years of memories with Dave, recalled the good times they spent together at Porta and the trust Dave placed in him, even handing over the keys for party bus trips out to Hoboken.
That kind of trust did not come easy, and it spoke volumes about the type of man Dave was.
Mike Healey, another close friend, described the gut punch that comes with losing someone you just saw two weeks before getting the news.
He remembered Dave’s last words to him being a casual but meaningful question about whether they would see each other at Bar A that summer. Those words now carry a weight that no one was prepared for.
Anthony Alagona put it simply and powerfully, saying that Dave’s energy was contagious and that he always had a smile no matter what.
That image of Dave, forever smiling, forever mixing up something special behind the bar, is the one his circle of friends will carry with them.
Dave was the kind of person the industry quietly depends on but rarely gets enough credit for celebrating. He brought people together, kept the good times going, and had a genuine warmth that made customers feel like they were hanging out with a friend rather than ordering a round.
The craft behind his drinks was one thing, but the personality that came with them was something else entirely.
He is survived by his brother Mike and the rest of the Quisumbing family, who are in the thoughts and prayers of everyone who had the privilege of knowing Dave personally or even just sharing a night at the bar with him.
The shore bars will absolutely not be the same without him. Come summer, when the crowds fill back in, and the music gets loud and the nights stretch long, there will be a noticeable absence behind those counters. But there will also be raised glasses, shared stories, and smiles in his honor.
Rest easy, DQ. You were one of the best.
