A North Carolina man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a cocaine trafficking scheme that involved shipping a package from San Diego to Portsmouth, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Court documents show that 41-year-old Kareem Akeem McMurrin and another person conspired to send a package containing 10 kilograms of cocaine from San Diego to Portsmouth.
Investigators with the U.S. Attorney’s Office said law enforcement intercepted the package on Feb. 5 and removed the cocaine before delivery. McMurrin picked up the package when it arrived.
When officers attempted to arrest him, McMurrin fled at a high rate of speed with his adolescent child in the vehicle and tried to discard the package. He was later located in March and taken into custody on an outstanding warrant.
“McMurrin’s conduct was inherently dangerous and damaging on a transnational scale,” said Lindsey Halligan, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. “He attempted to contribute to the success of a dangerous and larger enterprise. This administration has prioritized the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations and to protect our communities from their crimes. My office will persist in prosecuting drug traffickers to achieve these goals.”
The Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service investigated the case.
