NORTH CODORUS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — John Gross, 61, of Glenville, Pennsylvania, tragically lost his life Thursday morning in a head-on collision on Seven Valleys Road in North Codorus Township.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:35 a.m. on March 12, 2026, according to the Northern York County Regional Police.
Authorities reported that Gross was driving a 2025 Ford F-150 northbound when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle crossed into the southbound lane.
There, it collided with a 2024 Volvo tractor-trailer traveling south. The impact of the collision was severe, and Gross was pronounced dead at the scene by a York County deputy coroner.
The tractor-trailer was driven by a 55-year-old man from Toledo, Ohio, who was en route to Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania, to pick up a load of eggs.
Police confirmed that neither the tractor-trailer driver nor the trucking company sustained injuries, and both have been cooperating fully with authorities to assist in the ongoing investigation.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of devastation and fire. Joseph Hughes, who was driving his work truck with a partner, came across the wreck shortly after it occurred.
Hughes recalled seeing the vehicles engulfed in flames and immediately attempted to help. Despite the couple’s efforts to use a small fire extinguisher, they were unable to control the blaze.
“We just did it because it was the right thing to do,” Hughes told local news outlets. He and his partner took steps to prevent further accidents by directing traffic and keeping bystanders safe until emergency personnel arrived.
Hughes expressed hope that Gross’s family could take some comfort in knowing that all possible efforts were made to assist him before first responders reached the scene.
The Northern York County Regional Police have asked anyone who may have witnessed the accident or who has information to contact their department at 717-467-8355 or via email at [email protected]. The case has been assigned reference number 2026-009947.
Gross’s death has left the Glenville community mourning a respected member of the town. Friends and neighbors described him as a devoted family man with a strong work ethic, known for his kind spirit and willingness to help others.
The loss has been felt deeply among those who knew him, as the circumstances of the crash were sudden and devastating.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash to determine why the pickup truck crossed into oncoming traffic.
Road closures and traffic delays were reported in the area immediately following the collision as emergency crews and law enforcement worked to clear the scene.
This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise on the roads and the importance of vigilance and safety. Gross is survived by his family and friends, who now face the difficult task of coping with this unexpected loss.
Funeral and memorial details have not yet been released. Community members and others who wish to honor John Gross are encouraged to keep his family in their thoughts during this difficult time.
