Northwestern Wisconsin police officer shot; suspect in custody

A Superior police officer is expected to recover after being shot early Sunday morning, officials said.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice reported that around 2:44 a.m., an officer stopped a vehicle connected to a domestic dispute near North 37th Street and Tower Avenue.

Authorities said the suspect exited the vehicle and fired at the officer. Both the injured officer and a responding officer returned fire, striking the suspect.

The officer was transported to the hospital and has since been released.

Police said the suspect fled in the vehicle and crashed into Superior Middle School. Shortly after 7 a.m., law enforcement arrested the suspect, who received medical care at a hospital before being booked into the Douglas County Jail.

All officers involved will be placed on standard administrative leave while the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation leads the inquiry.

As a result of the incident, Superior Middle School will switch to at-home learning on Monday. The extent of damage to the school building has not been disclosed.

Superior sits just across the St. Louis River from Duluth, Minnesota.
