Claude Irvin Roakes, 78, of 2576 Theta Mill Road, Gladys went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 11, 2021. He was the husband of Phyllis Hawkins Roakes for 52 years.
He was born January 25, 1943 in Gladys, a son of the late Claude Hudson Roakes and Grace Tibbs Roakes. He was a member of Wesleybury United Methodist Church, retired from Mead (Rock Ten Corporation) after 31 years of service. He was also a tobacco and cattle farmer, and he served his country in the United States Air Force. Irvin was a member of the Mackey Masonic Lodge 69 A.F. & A.M., Rustburg and Staunton River Masonic Lodge 155 A.F. & A.M., Brookneal, where he served as the Worshipfull Master.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Hawkins Roakes; two sons, Patrick Todd Roakes and Chadwick Irvin Roakes both of Gladys; a granddaughter and the Light of His Life, Madison Grace Roakes; a daughter in law, Crystal Roakes; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Edward Roakes and Alvin Terrell Roakes; and one sister, Jane Elizabeth Roakes Rollins.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 16, 2021 at Wesleybury United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Shelton Miles and the Rev. William Smith with military honors by American Legion Altavista Memorial Post 36 and Gretna Post 232 and Masonic Rites.
Paying of respects will be from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday, May 14, 2021 at Finch & Finch Funeral & Cremation Service, Gladys.
