Omaha, NE: Police Identify 5 Officers Involved in Shooting That Killed Matthew Strain, 55

The Omaha Police Department has released the names of five officers connected to a deadly shooting that unfolded during a tense standoff at a South Omaha residence earlier this month, ending with the death of 55-year-old Matthew Strain.

The confrontation began the morning of June 2, when officers were called to a home near 19th and Bancroft after a landlord, who also resided at the property, reported that Strain would not leave and had made threatening statements.

According to police, Strain had received an informal notice to vacate roughly a month earlier and was expected to be out by June 1.

Once officers arrived, Strain reportedly refused to come out of his room and warned that he would shoot anyone who tried to force entry.

Police managed to get the landlord safely out of the home, but officials said Strain may have had access to both a rifle and a shotgun.

Negotiators spent hours attempting to talk him into surrendering peacefully, during which time Strain allegedly claimed to have a large supply of weapons and ammunition and stated he intended to fire on officers if they came in.

Investigators later secured a warrant accusing him of making terroristic threats.

Standoff Turns Deadly During Tactical Entry

By around 4 p.m., with negotiations stalled, the SWAT team moved in using an armored tactical vehicle nicknamed “the Rook” to breach the second-floor room where Strain had barricaded himself.

Authorities say that as the vehicle approached, Strain opened fire from a window using a rifle equipped with a high-capacity drum magazine.

Four members of the SWAT unit returned fire in response, two using lethal force and two deploying less lethal chemical munitions. Strain was killed in the exchange. No officers were hurt during the incident.

Officers Identified, Case Headed to Grand Jury

This week, the department publicly identified the five officers tied to the operation. They include Sgt. Sergio Gutierrez, a 14-year veteran of the force, along with Officer Trevor Shoemaker, who has eight years on the job.

Also named were Officer Tyler Anderson and Officer Lukas Brazier, each with 11 years of service, and Officer Jaime Desautels, who has served for about 17 and a half years.

All five have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues, which is standard procedure following officer-involved shootings.

Police Chief Todd Schmaderer addressed the incident publicly, noting that the situation escalated quickly once the tactical breach began. The department’s Officer Involved Investigations Team has since interviewed both the officers present and witnesses to the event, and that review remains ongoing.

Under Nebraska law, cases involving officer-involved deaths must ultimately be reviewed by a grand jury once the internal investigation wraps up.

Authorities have not indicated a timeline for when that review might take place, though they noted the process will move forward once all evidence and interviews have been compiled.

The shooting has drawn attention in the Omaha area partly because of how the dispute originated, as a routine landlord-tenant disagreement over an eviction that ultimately spiraled into an hours-long armed standoff.

Community members and local officials are expected to await further details as the grand jury process moves forward in the coming weeks.
