John Dineen, a retired Chicago police officer and longtime resident with deep roots in the West Side of Chicago, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2026, at the age of 89.
Surrounded by his family in his final moments, he left behind a legacy defined by service, devotion, and an enduring commitment to those he loved.
Born on July 4, 1936, to the late Tom and Dorothy Dineen, John grew up in Chicago, where he developed a strong sense of community and responsibility at an early age.
Those values would go on to shape both his personal life and his distinguished career in law enforcement.
As a member of the Chicago Police Department, John earned the respect of his colleagues and the community he served, carrying himself with integrity and quiet strength throughout his years on the force.
Beyond his professional life, John was first and foremost a family man. He shared 68 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Marilyn Dineen.
Their partnership stood as a testament to loyalty and love, providing a foundation for generations to come. Together, they raised a family that remained at the center of John’s world.
He was a devoted father to his children, a proud grandfather, and a cherished great-grandfather, known affectionately as Dad and Pa.
His presence brought comfort, guidance, and humor to family gatherings, and his stories will be remembered for years to come.
Those closest to him describe a man who was steady and dependable, someone who showed up when it mattered most. Whether through small daily acts or lifelong commitments, John expressed his care through action rather than words.
Friends, neighbors, and extended family members all felt the impact of his kindness and generosity.
John’s passing has also been deeply felt within the law enforcement community. The Chicago John Dineen Lodge No. 7, named in his honor, paid tribute to a man they described as a legend.
The recognition he received during his lifetime, including having the lodge bear his name, reflected the immense respect he commanded among his peers.
For many, it was meaningful that he was able to witness that honor firsthand and feel the appreciation of those he had influenced.
Visitation for John Dineen will be held on March 29, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cooney Funeral Home in Park Ridge, Illinois. A funeral service will follow on March 30, 2026, at St. Juliana Church in Chicago.
These gatherings will offer family, friends, and members of the community an opportunity to come together, share memories, and celebrate a life well lived.
As his family mourns his loss, they also remember the fullness of his life and the example he set. John Dineen’s legacy lives on in the values he instilled, the relationships he nurtured, and the countless lives he touched along the way.
