A man died Tuesday night after being shot on Jefferson Avenue in Newport News, police said.
Newport News Police said officers were called to the 11700 block of Jefferson Avenue at 6:23 p.m. for a reported shooting. When they arrived, they found a man outside with at least one gunshot wound, according to police.
The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he died at 6:54 p.m.
Detectives are canvassing the area, and NNPD forensics is processing the scene. Police said they do not have suspect information at this time.
The investigation is active.

This shooting happened about two weeks after another deadly incident on Jefferson Avenue, roughly seven miles away, where 55-year-old Denna Marshay Williams was found on a sidewalk near Jefferson Avenue and 45th Street early Nov. 26. The medical examiner ruled her cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head and the manner of death a homicide.
A Newport News man, Andra Leman Austin, 63, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in that case.
Another shooting in the 13000 block of Jefferson Avenue in June seriously injured a man outside Charcoal Chicken & Wings. In January, a man suffered potentially life-threatening injuries after being shot in the 12900 block of Jefferson Avenue near the Richneck Shopping Center.
