Reedley, CA, Fight Erupts at Kings Canyon Unified Graduation, 5 Arrested

Reedley, CA, Fight Erupts at Kings Canyon Unified Graduation, 5 Arrested

A graduation ceremony meant to celebrate students’ hard work turned chaotic Tuesday night after two separate fights broke out at Reedley High School’s football stadium during Kings Canyon Unified School District’s alternative education programs commencement.

Cell phone video captured by an ABC30 insider shows the moment things went wrong as graduates’ names were being called. Two young men were seen throwing punches at each other before two others joined in.

Another graduate tried stepping in to break it up. Just as things appeared to calm down, a second fight broke out with more people exchanging blows. Attendees rushed onto the field, including a woman in a brown shirt seen striking another person.

Police officers and district administrators moved in quickly to restore order, and several individuals were escorted off the field. Five people were arrested.

One Graduate’s Story Behind the Brawl

Among those arrested was Adam Velasquez, 19, who, his family says, worked hard to earn his diploma after losing his brother years ago. According to his family, Velasquez was standing in line waiting to receive his diploma when another graduate made an unprovoked comment insulting his late brother.

His emotions got the better of him, and the confrontation followed.

His family made clear the incident was not gang-related. Because of the fight, Velasquez did not get to walk or receive his diploma. They said they do not justify what happened and understand there are consequences.

Parents and Community React

The following evening, families gathered at Reedley High School’s theater for another graduation ceremony. The incident from the night before was still weighing heavily on many parents in attendance.

Curtis Wood, a parent from Orange Cove, did not hold back.

“You got to respect everybody here. It’s a family event. Whatever issues you have, whatever is going on, leave it at the door. We got women here, we got kids here. Everybody’s here. This is their time. It’s not ours, it’s not about us. It’s not about our problems. It’s about them succeeding.”

Parlier resident Luis Tapia shared similar feelings.

“The whole point of graduating high school is to learn to become a better person as well. I think they should’ve done better. They should’ve known.”

The Kings Canyon Unified School District released a statement saying the focus of the evening remained on celebrating graduates despite the incident.

The district credited security measures and the quick response from Reedley Police, district staff, and site administrators for resolving the situation promptly, allowing the ceremony to continue with minimal disruption.

What People Are Saying Online

The story spread quickly on social media, drawing strong reactions from readers.

Jasmine Cordova wrote:

“Boy I remember at graduation we were worried about giggling.”

Ninette Shorter pointed out:

“And then the grownups got involved.”

Ginger Renee Exley added sarcastically:

“I’m sure they were fighting over who won valedictorian.”

Jerry Balat joked:

“Releasing stress from all the studying.”

Mark Harrison simply commented:

“The usual suspects.”

What was supposed to be a proud milestone for students and families ended in handcuffs and heartbreak for at least one graduate who spent years working toward a moment he never got to have.
