A two-car collision in Rolling Meadows on Tuesday afternoon left one person dead and two others injured, including one in critical condition, according to authorities.
The crash brought emergency crews to a busy suburban intersection and shut down a stretch of road that remained closed into the evening.
Rolling Meadows police responded to the scene at West Algonquin Road and Magnolia Drive just after 4:30 p.m. Officers arrived to find two vehicles involved in the collision, one of which had rolled over.
Footage from the scene showed fire crews working to free at least one person who was trapped inside a pickup truck, a difficult extraction that required significant effort from first responders.
One of the three people involved in the crash was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries, while a third person sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Road Closure Disrupts Evening Traffic
Following the crash, Algonquin Road was shut down in both directions between Barker Avenue and Route 53. The closure affected a well-traveled stretch of road during the evening commute and was expected to remain in place for the duration of the investigation.
The City of Rolling Meadows advised residents to monitor the city’s official social media accounts for updates on when the road would reopen.
The intersection sits in a part of Rolling Meadows that sees consistent traffic throughout the day, and the closure forced drivers to seek alternate routes through surrounding neighborhoods and streets.
Investigation Underway
The Rolling Meadows Police Department is leading the investigation into what caused the crash. The department also called in the Major Case Assistance Team’s Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team, a specialized unit brought in to handle the technical side of serious and fatal traffic incidents.
Reconstruction teams analyze factors such as vehicle speed, point of impact, road conditions, and other physical evidence to help piece together the sequence of events that led to a crash.
No information about the identities of those involved had been released as of Tuesday evening. Police also had not disclosed which vehicle rolled over or what circumstances led to the collision. It remained unclear whether factors such as speed, traffic signals, or road conditions played a role.
The involvement of the reconstruction team signals that authorities are treating this as a serious investigation, likely with the possibility of criminal charges depending on what the evidence reveals. Fatal crash investigations of this nature can take days or weeks to complete before a final determination is made.
Neighbors and commuters in the area took notice of the heavy emergency presence along Algonquin Road throughout the afternoon and evening.
Rolling Meadows, a northwest suburb of Chicago in Cook County, has a population of roughly 24,000 people.
The stretch of Algonquin Road near the crash site is lined with commercial businesses and connects several residential neighborhoods, making it a frequently used corridor.
