Sand truck collides with plane on Minot airport tarmac, no injuries

A sand truck hit the front of a SkyWest plane Tuesday morning on the tarmac at Minot International Airport during icy conditions.

A spokesperson for the city of Minot, which manages the airport, confirmed the crash happened around 8:45 a.m.

According to the city’s report, an airport employee driving the sand truck responded to a call for sand in front of the plane at Gate 2. The driver hit ice, slid left, then slid backward into the aircraft’s nose.

The spokesperson said the plane was empty at the time, and no injuries were reported. The crash damaged both the plane and the truck.

Photos shared with Your News Leader show the nose cap of the aircraft partially detached.

United Airlines, which operates the plane, canceled its flights out of Minot as of noon Tuesday because of the weather, according to the city.

The city said all required reports are underway, including weather documentation and drug and alcohol screening.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol will lead the investigation, as required under airport protocol.

Travelers are encouraged to check with their airlines for updated flight information.
