A man was shot and killed Thursday afternoon inside a home in Shelby Township, and his adult son has been taken into custody in connection with the killing, according to police.
Officers were called to the 48000 block of Sandifer Court, located in the Dequindre Estates mobile home park near Dequindre and Hamlin roads, around 4:20 p.m. for a reported domestic dispute. When they arrived, they found an adult man who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shelby Township police Lt. Mark Benedettini confirmed that the case is being treated as a homicide investigation. A suspect was taken into custody shortly afterward, and officials said there is no continuing danger to the public.
Victim Identified as Father of Suspect
While police have not released the names of either the victim or the suspect, multiple news outlets, including WDIV-TV, reported that the man who died was the father of the person now in custody. Investigators have not disclosed what led up to the shooting or offered a possible motive.
Police said the case will be forwarded to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office for review. Formal charges are expected once the review is complete, followed by an arraignment for the suspect.
Authorities noted that more details about the incident will only be released once those steps in the legal process have taken place.
Neighbors Describe Hearing Gunfire
Residents of the mobile home park described a chaotic scene as the shooting unfolded. One neighbor, Corry Denham, said he heard a series of gunshots followed by screaming, describing what sounded like two shots, a scream, and then three more shots in quick succession.
Denham told reporters he was shaken by the incident, especially given how many children live in the community. He said the frequency of violent incidents in the neighborhood has left him exhausted and worried for the safety of the kids nearby.
The shooting adds to a string of recent public safety concerns in the region. Police have not indicated whether any additional charges beyond homicide are being considered, and the investigation remains active.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Shelby Township police as the case moves forward. As is standard in ongoing homicide investigations, few additional details are expected to be released publicly until the prosecutor’s office completes its review and charges are formally filed.
This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available from police and court officials.
