Carly Douglas, a beloved wife and mother from Greer, South Carolina, has passed away after a heartbreaking battle with stage 4 gastric cancer. Her death has left a community in mourning and a husband and three young children without the woman who was, by every account, the heart of their family.
The news was confirmed through social media by family friend Mary Keller, who posted alongside Carly’s mother-in-law, Renita McKinley Douglas.
The post shared that Carly had entered her “forever home” and that while hearts were broken, hope remained.
The words were brief but carried the full weight of a loss that had touched not just those who knew her personally, but hundreds of strangers who had followed her story online.
Carly’s diagnosis came without warning. Within weeks of showing symptoms, she was given a stage 4 gastric cancer diagnosis, one of the most aggressive and difficult to treat forms of the disease.
Her husband, David, stepped away from work almost immediately to be by her side, and their tight-knit community mobilized just as quickly.
As a stay-at-home mother, Carly had devoted herself fully to raising their three young children, and the practical gaps created by her illness were enormous.
Friends and family described her in ways that painted a picture of someone rare. The fundraising page set up in her name was called for someone for whom the phrase “to know her is to love her” was made. She showed up for people.
She was steady and kind and full of life. Those qualities made her diagnosis hit harder and drew people to her cause, even if they had never met her in person.
A Community That Refused to Let the Family Face This Alone
A GiveSendGo fundraiser titled “Fight Like Carly” was launched with a goal of $100,000. The money was intended to cover medical costs, daily household expenses, and to ensure that no treatment option would ever be ruled out because of finances.
Donations came from close friends, church members, and total strangers who had seen her story shared across social media. One donor wrote that Carly had touched her life despite never having met her. Others left prayers alongside their contributions.
At the same time, family friends Kellie and Brock Frisbee organized a Meal Train to make sure David and the children were fed and cared for through the difficult stretch. More than 130 people signed up.
The calendar is filled entirely, with meals booked through July 2026. When Carly was hospitalized, meals were rerouted to the home of David’s parents, where the children were staying.
After her passing, the organizer updated the train and asked supporters to keep showing up for the family in the weeks ahead.
Carly’s brother Corey Schuerman had earlier shared her diagnosis publicly on Facebook, asking people to pray alongside them and pointing friends toward both the fundraiser and the meal train.
She is survived by her husband, David, and their three children. The GiveSendGo fundraiser remains active for those wishing to support the Douglas family.
