The William Campbell football team kicked off their 2021 season this past Friday night in Moneta as head coach Danny Broggin took his young squad on the road. The Generals fell to Staunton River 48-16 in the season opener for both teams. The Golden Eagles would strike first on a 2-yard TD run by Jailin Martin (116 yards rushing, three TD’s) for the quick lead, but the Generals answered right back as quarterback Montavious Thompson hooked up with receiver Russell Thompson on a 10-yard TD pass to give his team an early 8-7 lead. The Golden Eagles’ rushing attack would dominate the rest of the first half as they raced out to a commanding 35-16 lead at the half. The Golden Eagles poured on more of the same the rest of the way, averaging seven yards per carry and piling up nearly 400 yards of total offense en route to the victory.

Montavious Thompson passed for 171 yards and two scores including a 16-yard TD pass to receiver JJ Graves (5 receptions 68 yards). Fellow wideout Russell Thompson added 5 receptions for 87 yards while running back Anthony Boyd (11 carries 37 yards) led the Generals on the ground in the loss. William Campbell (0-1) will travel to take on Cumberland Friday night at 7 p.m.
