A day at the new splash pad in Sterling/Rock Falls turned ugly after a mother and grandmother allegedly had their son/grandson threaten a 70-year-old Indian grandmother over a shaded bench seat, according to a Facebook post that has since gone viral in the local community group “What’s Happening in Sterling/Rockfalls.”
Jennifer Marie, who witnessed the incident firsthand, took to the community Facebook group to call out the family’s behavior.
She said the child was directed to tell the elderly woman that they would fight her simply because she was sitting on a bench in the shade.
When another grandmother who was with the elderly woman spoke up, the family turned on her too, wanting to start an argument.
What made it worse, Jennifer said, was what happened after the confronting family left the park. Instead of showing any remorse, they were laughing about the whole thing.
“I had absolutely no problem sharing our table with those lovely people,” Jennifer wrote. “And the sad part was after that family left, these people were literally laughing about it. So of course I had to correct them on their behavior. Which they then did not say anything back to me.”
Community Rallies Behind the Elderly Woman
The post quickly drew dozens of responses from residents who were disgusted by what happened. Many praised Jennifer for stepping in and speaking up when others might have looked the other way.
Bruce Munsell commented, “Thank you. You are what the park was made for.”
Susan Falcon added, “Good for you. It takes a village.”
Mary Lou Wells said,
“Good for you saying something. My great grands have respect and manners.”
Shelly Williams wrote,
“Good for you for speaking up. Can’t believe how disrespectful people are.”
Jamie Cox reflected on how much things have changed over the years, saying,
“When I was a kid we respected our elders. Now I’m the elder and it has changed a lot.”
Jennifer responded to that by saying kids back then behaved because their parents held them accountable, something she felt was clearly missing in this situation.
Concern Grows Over Public Safety and Racism
Not everyone kept the focus on respect and manners. Some commenters raised concerns about the racial element of the confrontation, noting that the victim was specifically identified as an Indian grandmother, raising questions about whether bias played a role in how she was targeted.
Christa Mitchell pointed out that regardless of race, a 70-year-old adult being verbally abused by children coached by their own guardians is simply wrong.
Sally Terry urged people to be careful when confronting others in public, warning that even kids carry weapons these days.
The incident has renewed conversations in the Sterling/Rock Falls area about how community spaces are shared and how visitors of all backgrounds should be treated with basic dignity and respect.
Residents are hoping the new splash pad remains a welcoming place for everyone.
