Court documents from La Porte County show that Dawson Mahoney entered a guilty plea in connection with the Oct. 19, 2023, death of 25-year-old Travis S. Clemons of Michigan City. Mahoney was originally charged with Murder but accepted a plea agreement on Nov. 20 for the lesser charge of Voluntary Manslaughter, a Level 2 Felony.
Mahoney’s jury trial had been set to begin Monday, Dec. 8.
His sentencing hearing is scheduled for Jan. 8, 2026.
According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, deputies found Clemons lying motionless at a residence in the 8600 West block of CR 400 North on Oct. 19, 2023.
Deputies were dispatched around 8:37 p.m. for a reported battery, and while en route, they were told a subject may have been struck by a vehicle.
Captain Andy Hynek arrived first and found Clemons lying unresponsive near a vehicle.
