A 16-year-old is dead, and two other teenagers are fighting serious injuries after a late-night crash in Hopewell, Virginia, that unfolded when a police officer attempted to pull over a recklessly driven vehicle and the driver sped away.
The incident began just before midnight on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, when the Hopewell Telecommunications center received a call about a large group of juveniles arguing in the roadway near the 100 block of South 8th Avenue.
A Hopewell Police officer responded to the scene and, upon arrival, spotted a black Nissan being operated recklessly.
The officer initiated a traffic stop, but before it could be completed, the driver put the vehicle in gear and fled.
According to police, the driver took off westbound on City Point Road at a high rate of speed. The chase continued onto Mesa Drive, where the driver lost control of the vehicle.
The car left the road and slammed into a tree, bringing the pursuit to a sudden and tragic end.
Three juveniles were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. Officers on scene immediately rendered aid while waiting for emergency services to arrive.
The 17-year-old driver and a 16-year-old passenger both sustained serious injuries and were transported to regional hospitals for treatment. A third passenger, also 16 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The identity of the teenager who died has not been released. Authorities said they are withholding that information pending notification of the victim’s next of kin.
Investigation Underway as Authorities Seek Witnesses and Information
Virginia State Police assisted at the crash scene, and the Hopewell Police Department Criminal Investigation Unit has since launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Investigators are working to piece together the full sequence of events leading up to the crash, including what triggered the initial argument that drew officers to South 8th Avenue in the first place.
The crash has left a community in mourning and once again raised concerns about reckless driving and the dangers that high-speed pursuits pose to both those inside a fleeing vehicle and the broader public.
The stretch of road where the crash occurred, from City Point Road to Mesa Drive, is a residential area, and the late-night timing of the incident meant that others could have easily been in harm’s way.
Hopewell Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the events leading up to the crash or the crash itself to come forward.

This remains a developing story, and additional details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
The names of all three juveniles involved are being withheld due to their ages and, in the case of the deceased, out of respect for the family during the notification process.
