The city of Austin is mourning the loss of two young lives after a mass shooting outside Buford’s bar on Sixth Street claimed the lives of 21-year-old Savitha Shan and 19-year-old Ryder Harrington in the early hours of Sunday, March 1.
The violence also left more than a dozen others injured and has shaken the University of Texas community and the broader Central Texas region.
According to the Austin Police Department, officers responded around 1:40 a.m. to reports of gunfire in the bustling entertainment district.
Authorities said the gunman drove past the bar in a large SUV, activated his hazard lights, rolled down his window, and fired a pistol toward people gathered outside.
He later parked nearby, exited the vehicle armed with a rifle, and began walking back toward the area before being confronted and shot by responding officers.
Police identified the suspect as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Senegal. Investigators confirmed he carried two firearms, both legally purchased in 2017.
An explosives unit examined his vehicle after concerning materials were found, but no explosive devices were discovered.
Federal authorities have stated that early evidence suggests a possible terrorism nexus, though the investigation remains ongoing.
Savitha Shan, whose legal last name was Shanmugasundaram, was a senior at the University of Texas at Austin and a dual-degree honor student at the McCombs School of Business.
She was known on campus not only for her academic excellence but also for her leadership and cultural involvement.
Shan served on the executive board of the Indian Students Association and actively participated in campus life.
University President Jim Davis described her as a cherished member of the Longhorn community, emphasizing her kindness, ambition, and dedication.
Faculty members called her one of their standout students, noting that she was preparing to launch her professional career with a major services firm after graduation.
Outside of academics, Shan remained closely connected to her heritage. She was involved with Raas Roedo, an Austin-based organization that hosts traditional Gujarati folk dance events.
On social media, she once shared that visiting all seven wonders of the world topped her bucket list and that she dreamed of owning a Range Rover. Those aspirations, once lighthearted and hopeful, now stand as reminders of a life filled with promise.
She was the daughter of Muthian Shanmugasundaram, a director at Stealth Mode Biotech in Boston. Before moving in 2023, he spent 17 years as a senior staff scientist at Thermo Fisher Scientific in Austin, where he contributed to multiple scientific discoveries.
Friends described the family as close and deeply supportive of Savitha’s ambitions.
Nineteen-year-old Ryder Harrington was also killed in the shooting. Authorities confirmed his identity alongside Shan’s during a press briefing.
Though fewer public details have been released about Harrington’s background, his death has deeply impacted his family, friends, and the local community.
Harrington was just beginning adulthood, with his life and future ahead of him.
Loved ones have remembered him as a young man with energy, potential, and strong connections to those around him.
His loss, like Shan’s, underscores the profound toll the attack has taken on families who are now grappling with unimaginable grief.
In addition to Shan and Harrington, 30-year-old Jorge Pederson later died after being taken off life support. Fourteen others were injured, with several remaining in critical condition in the days following the attack.
Police credited their rapid response — reportedly under a minute — with preventing even greater loss of life. Officers who were already assigned to the busy entertainment district quickly confronted the suspect and ended the threat.
The FBI continues to work alongside local and state authorities to determine whether the attack was ideologically motivated.
Reports indicated the suspect wore clothing with religious messaging and possessed items connected to Iran, prompting investigators to explore potential links to international events.
Officials have emphasized that the case remains in its early stages and that all leads are being examined carefully.
