A tragic motorcycle crash in northern Ohio has claimed the life of a 35-year-old Amherst man, leaving a community in mourning and authorities continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred evening, March 21, 2026, at approximately 7:53 p.m. along U.S. Route 6 near Sunnyside Road in Vermilion.
Troopers from the Elyria Post responded to the scene after receiving reports of a serious two-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck.
Preliminary findings indicate that a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado had come to a stop at a traffic light while traveling eastbound on U.S. Route 6.
Moments later, a 2025 Yamaha YZF-R7 motorcycle traveling in the same direction struck the rear of the stationary truck. Investigators say the motorcycle failed to maintain an assured clear distance ahead, leading to the collision.
The motorcyclist was identified as Corey Yarmock of Amherst. Emergency medical personnel arrived quickly and transported him from the scene with life-threatening injuries. Despite their efforts, Yarmock later succumbed to those injuries.
Authorities confirmed that Yarmock was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, a detail that underscores the severity of the impact.
The driver of the Silverado, identified as 21-year-old Grady Watkins of Lexington, Tennessee, was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured in the incident.
Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the Vermilion Police Department, Vermilion Fire Department, Lifecare EMS, and D&A Towing. The roadway was temporarily affected as crews worked to secure the area and begin the investigation.
While the initial report points to a failure to maintain a safe following distance, officials emphasize that the crash remains under active investigation.
No additional contributing factors, such as speed, visibility conditions, or impairment, have been confirmed at this time.
News of Yarmock’s passing has spread quickly through the Amherst community, where friends, family members, and residents are expressing grief and disbelief over the sudden loss.
Social media tributes describe him as someone taken too soon, with many reflecting on the fragility of life and the lasting impact of such unexpected tragedies.
Motorcycle accidents often result in severe outcomes due to the limited protection riders have compared to occupants of larger vehicles.
Even with proper safety gear, including helmets, collisions at road speeds can be devastating. Authorities frequently remind motorists and riders alike to remain vigilant, maintain safe distances, and anticipate traffic conditions to prevent such incidents.
This crash serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of roadway awareness and caution, particularly at intersections and in areas with traffic signals where sudden stops are common.
Investigators will continue to review evidence, including witness statements and any available surveillance footage, to determine whether additional details can clarify the sequence of events.
As the investigation continues, the focus for many remains on remembering Corey Yarmock and supporting those affected by his loss. Funeral arrangements and memorial details have not yet been publicly announced.
Officials encourage anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information to contact the Ohio State Highway Patrol to assist in the ongoing investigation.
