A Virginia Beach man has been charged in connection with the deadly September shooting of 19-year-old Montario D. Johnson Jr. in Norfolk. Detectives have arrested 19-year-old Pierre Delaigle on charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Police took Delaigle into custody on November 19 at approximately 11:10 a.m. He is being held without bond at the Norfolk City Jail and also faces additional, unrelated charges.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting on September 15 at the intersection of East 28th Street and Gazel Street just before noon. When they arrived, they found Johnson suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital but later died from his injuries.
Residents in the area described the shooting as rare and unsettling.
“It’s definitely pretty concerning,” neighbor Tyler Braatz said. “It makes you rethink the neighborhood and stuff.”
Another resident, Nelly Bruce, said the community is typically calm and close-knit.
“This is not a common occurrence,” she said. “Everybody out here has known each other for years. This is a very laid-back, cool area.”
