Wilton police are investigating the death of a 13-year-old girl, with authorities describing the incident as a possible suicide, according to a press release issued Wednesday afternoon by the Wilton Police Department.
Public Information Officer Lt. Anna Tornello confirmed that officers and detectives are thoroughly examining the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.
The department is working alongside the Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, which will ultimately determine the official cause and manner of death.
“A family in our community is grieving an unimaginable loss,” Tornello said. “We extend our deepest condolences to her loved ones during this extremely difficult time.”
Tornello also acknowledged the first responders who arrived at the scene. “We thank the officers and our public safety partners who responded to this tragic incident today and worked tirelessly in their attempts to save this young person’s life,” she said.
No additional details about the circumstances of the death have been released out of respect for the family.
Schools Respond as Community Processes the Loss
Wilton Superintendent of Schools Kevin Smith sent a letter to school families and staff on Wednesday afternoon confirming the death of an eighth-grade student. Smith described it as news no school leader ever wishes to deliver.
“I write to share a message of profound sadness that no school leader or parent ever wishes to deliver. This morning we learned that an eighth-grade student suddenly and tragically passed away,” Smith wrote.
Smith extended condolences on behalf of the Board of Education, faculty, staff, and the broader Wilton Public Schools community to the student’s family, friends, classmates, and teachers.
He noted that Wilton has faced hardship before and emphasized that the community would once again draw on its collective strength in the days ahead.
Counseling and support services staff within Wilton Public Schools are available to meet with students, staff, and families throughout the district.
School officials also announced a community Zoom call scheduled for Thursday, May 21, at 7:30 p.m. featuring Dr. Andrew Gerber of Silver Hill Hospital. The session is intended to help parents and community members support children in processing grief.
The Wilton Police Department said it is continuing to work closely with school leadership and community partners to connect individuals with mental health resources, reinforce prevention and early intervention efforts, and ensure accurate information reaches the public responsibly.
Resources Available for Those in Need
Tornello urged community members, particularly those on social media, to avoid speculation and refrain from sharing unconfirmed information about the incident.
She also encouraged parents and guardians to have open, age-appropriate conversations with their children and to watch closely for signs of distress or changes in behavior.
“News like this can be deeply upsetting, especially for young people,” Tornello said.
