The community in Buffalo is mourning the loss of Phil Malec, a resident whose life was tragically cut short following a fatal crash in nearby Amherst earlier this week.
According to authorities, the accident took place Tuesday evening on Hopkins Road and involved three vehicles.
Police said a 43-year-old man driving a Ford Mustang was heading northbound when he collided head-on with a Honda Pilot driven by a 56-year-old man.
The impact triggered a chain reaction, as the Honda Pilot was then struck from behind by a GMC Terrain driven by a 79-year-old woman traveling southbound.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash, but the driver of the Mustang was pronounced dead on the scene.
Officials initially did not release the victim’s name, but tributes shared online and within the community have identified him as Phil Malec.
The other two drivers were taken to Erie County Medical Center with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Authorities confirmed that the crash scene was cleared later that night, though the investigation into what caused the collision is still ongoing.
News of Malec’s death has led to an outpouring of grief on social media, where friends and community members have shared heartfelt messages and memories.
One widely shared tribute read, “R.I.P. Phil Malec. We love you bud,” capturing the sense of loss felt by those who knew him.
While official details about his life have not yet been widely released, people who knew Malec describe him as a familiar and valued member of the community. His sudden passing has left many in shock, especially given the unexpected nature of the accident.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash and have asked anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has video footage to come forward. Their efforts are focused on understanding the full sequence of events that led to the fatal collision.
As friends and family grieve, the focus remains on remembering Phil Malec and supporting those closest to him. His death serves as a tragic reminder of how quickly lives can change and how deeply one person can impact a community.
