Brianna Marie VanderVeen, born November 14, 2005, was a cherished young woman from Grand Rapids, Michigan, who passed away on April 6, 2026, at the age of 20.
Her sudden passing left a deep void in the lives of her family, friends, teammates, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Brianna was widely remembered for her radiant personality, kindness, and ability to bring warmth and joy into every space she entered.
From a young age, Brianna stood out for her compassionate nature and strong sense of purpose. She had a natural way of making people feel seen and valued, often brightening rooms with her smile and uplifting those around her through simple acts of kindness.
Friends and family describe her as someone who was thoughtful, supportive, and deeply loyal to the people she cared about. Her presence created a lasting impression that will not be forgotten by those whose lives she touched.
Brianna was also deeply committed to her education and future career. She was pursuing a degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography at Grand Rapids Community College and was scheduled to graduate on April 30, 2026.
She had already been accepted to Grand Valley State University, where she planned to continue her studies and was also offered a place on the lacrosse team.
Her dedication to helping others through healthcare reflected her strong desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
In addition to her academic achievements, Brianna was a passionate and determined athlete. She was a four-year varsity lacrosse player and played a key role in advocating for a combined high school program when her school did not have a team.
Her leadership and determination helped create opportunities for athletes across Kenowa Hills, Jenison, and Comstock Park to compete together. Teammates and coaches remember her as a driven competitor who led by example, both on and off the field.
Family, Character, and Lasting Impact
Brianna is survived by her loving family, including her mother Celesta, father Paul VanderVeen, stepfather Stephen Junewick II, and brother Alex.
She is also survived by her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and many extended family members and close friends who will forever hold her memory in their hearts. Her family remembers her as a bright light whose love and energy brought them closer together.
Even in her passing, Brianna continued to impact others through her decision to become an organ donor, fulfilling a wish to give the gift of life to those in need.
This final act of generosity reflected the same selflessness she showed throughout her life. A memorial mass will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, where family and friends will gather to celebrate her life and share memories.
Brianna’s legacy lives on through the countless lives she influenced with her kindness, determination, and spirit.
She will be remembered not only for her accomplishments but for the way she made people feel valued, supported, and loved. Her memory continues to inspire those who knew her to live with greater compassion and purpose.
