The Klein Oak High School community is mourning a heartbreaking loss after senior basketball player Kenrik Kabano and his mother, Rosine Kabano, were killed in a car accident earlier this week in Texas.
The crash happened Monday evening along Interstate 45 near Madisonville. Authorities have not yet released full details about what led to the accident, but the news has left family members, friends, and classmates in deep shock.
Kenrik had just turned 18 on April 15 and was only weeks away from graduating in May. Known to many as “Kenny,” he had recently transferred to Klein Oak High School, where he quickly made a lasting impression both on the basketball court and in the classroom.
A promising life and lasting impact
Those who knew Kenrik describe him as far more than a talented athlete. Coaches and school staff consistently pointed to his character, humility, and positive attitude as what truly set him apart.
Basketball coach Joshua Ervin shared that Kenrik was one of the most respectful and genuine young people he had ever met. He recalled how Kenrik greeted everyone with a warm smile and carried himself with maturity beyond his years.
On the court, Kenrik was a standout player, earning first-team all-district honors. Off the court, he excelled academically as well, receiving recognition on both academic all-district and academic all-state teams. His ability to balance athletics and academics made him a role model for other students.
Kenrik’s talent also reached beyond his school. He represented Rwanda at the 2023 FIBA U16 AfroBasket tournament in Tunisia, where he delivered impressive performances, including a standout scoring game against Egypt. He was widely seen as a rising prospect with a bright future in basketball.
But for many, what mattered most was his kindness. Friends and teachers remember him as someone who connected easily with others and treated people with genuine care and respect.
Family grief and community support
The tragedy has been especially devastating for the Kabano family. Kenrik and his mother, Rosine, are survived by his father, Mike, his younger sister Kelia, and his brother, Kai.
Rosine is being remembered as a devoted and strong mother who shared a close bond with her son. Those close to the family say their relationship was evident in the way they supported each other in everyday life.
In the wake of the loss, the community has come together to offer support. A GoFundMe fundraiser was created by family friends to help cover funeral and memorial expenses and to assist the family during this difficult time.
Within a short period, tens of thousands of dollars have been raised, reflecting the wide impact Kenrik and his family had on those around them.
Messages of condolences have poured in from classmates, teammates, and members of the wider community. Many have shared memories of Kenrik’s generosity, his work ethic, and the positivity he brought into their lives.
As Klein Oak High School prepares for graduation, the absence of Kenrik will be deeply felt. What should have been a time of celebration has instead become a moment of reflection and mourning.
Even so, those who knew him say his legacy will not be forgotten. Through his achievements, his character, and the lives he touched, Kenrik Kabano leaves behind a lasting impact that will continue to be remembered by his school and community.
