The small community of DeWitt, Iowa, is grieving the tragic loss of a beloved middle school teacher following a devastating accident earlier this week.
Trisha Brookins, a dedicated educator known for her passion in the classroom, died after her vehicle crashed into a home and caught fire on Wednesday afternoon.
According to authorities, Brookins was driving along 190th Street when she experienced a sudden medical emergency behind the wheel.
Investigators from the Iowa State Patrol reported that her vehicle veered off the roadway, entered a ditch, and continued through a field before ultimately colliding with a residential property.
The crash’s impact sparked a fire that quickly engulfed both the vehicle and part of the home.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, Brookins was unable to escape from the burning vehicle. Officials confirmed that she was the only person inside the car at the time of the accident.
Fortunately, no one was inside the house when the crash occurred, preventing further injuries or fatalities.
The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office noted that while the fire caused severe property damage, the situation could have been far worse if the home had been occupied.
The property owner, who witnessed the incident, later shared that the loss of the house was secondary to the loss of Brookins’ life. He expressed sorrow and said he wished there had been more he could have done to help.

Brookins was a 7th-grade science teacher at Central DeWitt Middle School and had built a strong reputation as a caring and committed educator.
