A serious single-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 60 has left a Tonkawa woman fighting for her recovery. Sara Sawyer, a 30-year-old resident of Tonkawa, Oklahoma, was injured in the crash that took place at 8:32 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at the intersection of U.S. 60 and Q Street.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) has confirmed Sara Sawyer’s involvement and reported that she sustained injuries in the incident. Trooper Colton McBride #675 is leading the investigation, and authorities have stated that further details remain under review.
According to Kay County Sheriff’s radio logs, the Tonkawa Police Department notified the sheriff’s office about a single-vehicle accident on the westbound side of the highway.
Tonkawa ambulance crews responded quickly to the scene. A separate accident was reported about twenty minutes later on the eastbound side, but available information does not specify which one involved Sara Sawyer.
Sara was rushed to the hospital immediately after the crash. She remains in critical but stable condition. Her injuries are extensive and life-altering.
She suffered a brain bleed, a tear in her aorta, a fractured C1 vertebra, eight broken ribs, and fractures to her hip, femur, ankle, heel, and wrist. She also sustained a torn bladder, which doctors have already surgically repaired.
Medical teams have stabilized her major fractures for the time being. Starting Monday, March 2, 2026, Sara is scheduled to undergo multiple surgeries to plate and screw several of her broken bones.
She will likely spend several more weeks in the hospital as these procedures take place. Once the surgeries are complete, doctors plan to gradually wean her off sedation and the ventilator.
Her family describes this as an incredibly serious situation. While they are deeply grateful that Sara is still with them, they know the road to recovery will be long, challenging, and full of uncertainties.
Sara is a devoted single mother and a beloved fifth-grade teacher at First Lutheran School in Ponca City. Her young daughter depends on her every day, and there are many responsibilities waiting at home.
The physical, emotional, and financial demands of her recovery will be significant. She will need extensive physical rehabilitation in the months ahead to regain strength and mobility.
Her sister, Shelby Sawyer, has organized support to help ease some of the burdens.
A GoFundMe campaign, along with options for donations through PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, and Cash App, has been set up to cover medical expenses and provide financial stability for Sara’s daughter.
This allows Sara to focus fully on healing without added worry. The family humbly asks for continued prayers, positive thoughts, and strength during this difficult time.
The community has rallied around Sara and her loved ones, with updates shared through local news and social media.
As the OHP investigation continues, friends, colleagues, and supporters are coming together to show their care and support for this dedicated teacher and mother.
