Baton Rouge Woman Taniya Smith, 24, Killed in West Baton Rouge Parish Crash

A Baton Rouge woman died late Wednesday night following a single-vehicle crash along Louisiana Highway 1 in West Baton Rouge Parish, according to local authorities.

Officials identified the victim as 24-year-old Taniya Smith of Baton Rouge. The crash occurred on the northbound lanes of LA 1 on the southern side of the Intracoastal Waterway bridge, an area that has steady traffic flow connecting Baton Rouge with communities across West Baton Rouge Parish.

Deputies with the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened shortly before 11:30 p.m.

Emergency responders were dispatched after reports of a serious wreck near the stretch of highway close to local businesses, including a Walmart and a RaceTrac gas station. Some reports also placed the crash near an OYO Motel along the same roadway corridor.

When first responders arrived at the scene, they found that the crash involved only one vehicle. Authorities confirmed that Smith was the sole occupant. She was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

The Louisiana State Police and the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office are both involved in the investigation.

Officials have not released information about what may have caused the vehicle to leave the roadway or whether speed, impairment, road conditions, or mechanical issues played any role. At this stage, investigators have not indicated that any other vehicles were involved.

The section of LA 1 where the crash occurred is a heavily traveled route that runs alongside industrial areas and commercial establishments.

It also includes bridge crossings and stretches of roadway where visibility and traffic patterns can shift quickly depending on time of day and weather conditions. Authorities have not stated whether the weather was a contributing factor in this case.

News of the crash spread quickly through local media outlets on Thursday, with multiple reports confirming the identity of the victim and the location of the incident.

Officials emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing and that more details will be released once the crash reconstruction and evidence review are complete.

Family members and friends of Taniya Smith are now left grieving her sudden loss. At just 24 years old, she was described in reports as a Baton Rouge resident with her whole life ahead of her.

No additional personal details about her background or activities leading up to the crash have been released by authorities.

Law enforcement agencies are expected to conduct a full reconstruction of the crash scene, which typically includes reviewing roadway evidence, vehicle damage, surveillance footage from nearby businesses, and any available witness statements.

Toxicology results, if ordered, may also take time to complete as part of the standard investigative process in fatal crashes.

Authorities have not announced whether any citations or charges are being considered. Officials also have not confirmed if road closures or traffic disruptions occurred immediately after the crash, though incidents of this nature often require temporary lane closures while emergency crews respond and investigators document the scene.

As the investigation continues, officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has relevant information to contact the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office or the Louisiana State Police.

Further updates are expected once investigators determine the factors that led to the fatal crash on LA 1.
