Brick Memorial Freshman Killed by BMW While Biking to School; Teen Driver Arrested

A freshman at Brick Memorial High School was struck and killed Tuesday morning while riding his bicycle to school, sending shockwaves through the Ocean County community and prompting the arrest of a teenage driver who fled the scene without calling for help.

The fatal crash occurred around 6:50 a.m. at the intersection of Lanes Mill Road and Rhode Island Avenue in Brick Township, an area well familiar to students who commute on foot and by bike to the nearby high school.

According to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer, the young bicyclist was crossing the road inside a marked crosswalk when a 2021 BMW sedan came speeding through the intersection and struck him. Emergency responders pronounced the student dead at the scene.

What made the incident even more disturbing to residents and school community members was what happened in the immediate aftermath.

The driver of the BMW, also identified as a teenager, did not stop the vehicle or contact law enforcement following the collision. Instead, according to Billhimer, the driver left the area entirely.

Investigators were eventually able to locate the teenager, who was subsequently taken into custody on juvenile charges of knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash resulting in death.

A video that began circulating on social media appeared to capture moments following the crash.

Recorded from the window of a nearby residence, the footage showed two young men standing near the BMW, appearing to photograph or document the damage to the car, before walking away from the vehicle.

The clip spread rapidly online and drew widespread outrage from community members who viewed it.

Brick police shut down Lanes Mill Road between Michigan Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue as investigators worked the scene throughout the morning.

Officers issued a Nixle community alert shortly after 7:30 a.m. notifying residents of police activity in the area, though initial notifications did not specify the nature or severity of what had taken place.

The Brick School District released a statement confirming the tragedy without disclosing the student’s identity.

“This morning there was an accident that resulted in a tragedy for Brick Schools,” the statement read. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the student. Brick Schools has grief counseling and support services available for all students and staff. This is an incredibly sad and tragic event for our community and we need to support one another during this difficult time.”

Brick Memorial High School sits close to the stretch of Lanes Mill Road where the crash took place, a detail that adds painful weight to the circumstances.

Many students from the school travel that corridor regularly during the morning commute, and Tuesday’s events left faculty, classmates, and parents grappling with grief before the school day had even officially begun.

Counselors were made available to students and staff across the district as word of the crash spread through the school community.

Parents and community members took to social media to express their condolences and frustration, with many calling for greater traffic safety measures near school zones throughout the township.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s office had not released additional information about potential charges or the status of the investigation.

The identity of the student who died had not been officially confirmed by authorities.
