A community is grieving the loss of a 15-year-old boy after a hit-and-run crash claimed his life just blocks from his high school in Brick, New Jersey, earlier this week.
Jackson Mueller, a freshman at Brick Memorial High School, was riding his bicycle through a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Lanes Mill Road and Rhode Island Avenue when he was struck by a speeding vehicle just before 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Brick police, the vehicle involved was a 2021 BMW that was traveling at excessive speed when it hit Mueller, who was legally crossing through the marked crosswalk.
After the collision, the driver did not stop to check on the victim, did not call for help, and did not render any aid before leaving the scene.
Investigators worked quickly to track down the vehicle and its driver. A juvenile driver was identified in connection with the crash and was later taken into custody.
The teen now faces a charge of knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash resulting in death and is currently being held at the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center.
The loss sent a wave of shock and heartbreak through the Brick community, particularly among students and staff at Brick Memorial High School, which Mueller attended as a freshman.
The school sits only a few blocks from the site of the crash, a stretch of road Mueller likely traveled regularly.
On Wednesday evening, friends, family members, and classmates came together to hold a candlelight vigil in memory of the young boy. Organizers had originally planned to gather at the crash site itself, but the location was moved to the school parking lot for safety reasons.
Dozens of those who knew and loved Mueller attended, sharing memories and offering comfort to one another during an extraordinarily difficult time.
Chrissie Arif, a longtime family friend whose own child was close with Mueller, created a GoFundMe campaign to help his parents with the financial burden of laying their son to rest.
By Wednesday evening, the campaign had raised nearly $80,000. Funeral arrangements are currently being made.
The circumstances of the crash have left many in the community angry and heartbroken. Mueller was doing everything right.
He was on his bicycle, crossing through a designated crosswalk, heading toward his school on a Tuesday morning, the kind of routine so many teenagers repeat without a second thought.
The fact that the driver fled without stopping, without calling 911, without doing anything to help, has only deepened the grief felt by those who knew him.
Hit-and-run crashes that involve young victims often prompt broader conversations about road safety, speeding near schools, and accountability for drivers who choose to flee rather than face the consequences of their actions.
In this case, the arrest of the juvenile driver has brought at least some degree of accountability, though nothing can undo the devastation left behind.
Jackson Mueller was 15 years old and had his entire life ahead of him. Those who knew him describe a young person who was deeply loved.
His family, friends, and community are left to mourn a loss that never should have happened.
