Brooklyn Mourns 18-Year-Old Quahmir Cruz Killed in Mother’s Day Shooting at Van Dyke Houses

Brooklyn Mourns 18-Year-Old Quahmir Cruz Killed in Mother’s Day Shooting at Van Dyke Houses

A Sunday afternoon that most New Yorkers spent with their mothers ended in tragedy for one Brooklyn family.

Quahmir Cruz, 18, was shot and killed inside the Van Dyke Houses, a New York City Housing Authority complex in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, on May 10, 2026.

The shooting occurred just after 3 p.m., near 375 Blake Avenue, casting a dark shadow over what is typically one of the warmest days of the year.

Officers from the New York Police Department arrived at the scene following reports of a man shot. They found Cruz suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Emergency medical personnel transported him to One Brooklyn Health-Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. He was a Brooklyn resident.

The NYPD has opened a homicide investigation into the killing.

As of Sunday evening, no arrests had been made, and investigators had not released a description of any suspect or disclosed a possible motive for the shooting. The case remains active.

A Community Left With Questions

Brownsville has long been one of the most challenged neighborhoods in New York City, where residents have fought for decades against poverty, underfunding, and gun violence.

The Van Dyke Houses, like many large public housing developments in the borough, have seen their share of tragedy over the years.

For those who live there and in surrounding blocks, news of another young life cut short is a painful and all-too-familiar reality.

Cruz was only 18 years old. Whatever path he was on, whatever plans he may have had, they ended on a Sunday afternoon in the hallways or grounds of a housing complex where thousands of families call home.

The timing of the shooting, on Mother’s Day of all days, makes the loss feel even more wrenching for those who knew him and for the broader community watching from the outside.

Gun violence in New York City has been a persistent concern for elected officials and community organizers alike.

While the city has made strides in some areas, incidents like the one that claimed Cruz’s life serve as a reminder that for many young people in certain neighborhoods, the streets remain deeply dangerous.

Investigators Seek Tips From the Public

With no arrests made and few details publicly available about what led to the shooting, investigators are appealing to the public for help.

The NYPD is asking anyone with information to submit tips through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), visiting the official Crime Stoppers website, using the NYPD Crime Stoppers mobile app, or texting 274637 and entering TIP577.

Spanish-speaking residents can reach a dedicated line at 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). All tips can be submitted anonymously.

For a family somewhere in Brooklyn, Mother’s Day 2026 will not be remembered for flowers or brunch or phone calls home.

It will be remembered as the day they lost Quahmir Cruz. He was 18 years old. The investigation is ongoing, and those responsible have yet to be identified.
