A former teacher and coach who worked at two Toledo Catholic schools has been arrested in Florida on federal child pornography charges, authorities confirmed this week.
Patrick Russell, 37, was arrested on May 28 by the U.S. Marshals Service and booked into the Broward County jail in Florida. Federal charging documents allege that Russell admitted to FBI agents that he had been viewing, receiving, and distributing child sexual abuse material through social media platforms, including X, Telegram, and Zangi.
Forensic investigators recovered more than 3,000 images and videos of child sexual abuse material from his phone after the FBI executed a search warrant earlier this year.
The case was filed on May 28, following an investigation that led agents to Russell. Charging documents included excerpts from online chat messages in which Russell allegedly described children in sexual acts. According to those documents, Russell told agents that he had been “battling this for a while.”
He also reportedly stated that he had never physically touched a minor inappropriately, but acknowledged engaging in inappropriate conversations about minors, some of which were sexual in nature, and that he may have requested images and videos of minors. A detention hearing is scheduled for June 16.
Toledo School Connections Raise Questions
Russell’s arrest drew attention in Toledo because of his prior employment at two local Catholic institutions. He worked as a teacher and coach at St. John’s Jesuit High School from fall 2013 through spring 2016, and he also held a position at St. Benedict Catholic School in 2015.
Both schools released statements following news of the arrest, each stressing that the alleged conduct was not connected to his time working with their students.
A spokesperson for St. John’s Jesuit confirmed the dates of his employment and stated there is no evidence of criminal behavior during his tenure there. Fr. Jason Kahle, pastor of Little Flower Catholic Church and superintendent of St. Benedict Catholic School, echoed that position in his own statement to school families.
“At this time, we have no information or evidence suggesting that any inappropriate conduct occurred during his time at St. Benedict,” Kahle wrote. “Furthermore, no concerns, complaints, or reports related to this matter were brought to the school’s attention during his employment.”
Both institutions asked their communities to pray for everyone affected by the situation.
Community Response
The arrest has drawn significant concern across the Toledo area, given Russell’s background working with young people in school and athletic settings.
While investigators have not publicly indicated that any of the alleged crimes involved students from either Toledo school, the case has prompted both institutions to reassure parents and families.
Federal child pornography charges carry serious penalties under U.S. law, and Russell remains in federal custody in Florida as the case moves forward. The investigation was led by the FBI, and the case is being handled at the federal level.
Anyone with information relevant to the case is encouraged to contact the FBI. Russell is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Further developments in the case are expected as his detention hearing approaches later this month.
