A 21-year-old man from Lockport is dead after his motorcycle slammed into a car on Fisk Road on Wednesday evening, June 4, 2026. New York State Police identified the victim as Matthew J. Lauer, who was pronounced dead at the scene following the collision at approximately 8:20 p.m.
According to investigators, Lauer was riding a 2026 Kawasaki motorcycle eastbound on Fisk Road when he struck a 2026 Honda CRV that was traveling westbound and turning south into a private driveway.
The force of the impact left no chance for survival. The 66-year-old driver of the Honda CRV suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
State troopers from SP Lockport responded to the crash and quickly determined that speed was a central factor in the tragedy. Investigators believe Lauer was traveling at roughly double the posted speed limit at the time of the collision, with one account describing his pace as an “extreme rate of speed.”
The combination of his excessive speed and the position of the setting sun made it virtually impossible for the Honda driver to see him approaching before making the turn.
Trooper James O’Callaghan spoke directly to the circumstances of the crash and offered a pointed warning to other riders.
“Just because it’s summer, just because it’s nice out, it’s not raining, there’s no snow, doesn’t give you permission to go at those excessive speeds,” O’Callaghan said.
His words reflect a concern that warmer months often bring a false sense of security on the roads, particularly among motorcyclists who may feel emboldened by clear skies and dry pavement.
Investigation Ongoing as Reconstruction Unit Examines the Scene
The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation are both assisting with the ongoing investigation into the crash.
Authorities have not indicated that any charges will be filed against the driver of the Honda CRV, as the preliminary evidence suggests the car was making a routine turn and the driver had no reasonable way to detect the approaching motorcycle, given the speed involved and the blinding effect of the sunset.
Fatal motorcycle crashes during the warmer months are a recurring and deeply troubling pattern across New York State and much of the country. Motorcyclists are far more vulnerable than occupants of enclosed vehicles, with little protection between themselves and the road in any collision.
Speed dramatically compounds that risk, shortening reaction time for both the rider and other drivers on the road and multiplying the severity of any impact.
Lockport and the surrounding Niagara County area have seen similar tragedies in past years, and safety advocates consistently point to speed as one of the leading contributing factors in fatal motorcycle crashes.
Riders are urged to observe posted speed limits, remain visible to other drivers, and account for environmental conditions such as sun glare, especially during morning and evening hours when low light angles can render fast-moving vehicles nearly invisible to turning drivers.
Lauer was just 21 years old. His death is a painful reminder of how quickly a summer ride can turn into a tragedy on roads that seem perfectly safe at first glance.
