Former Iowa State Cheerleader, 26, Passes Away Suddenly on St. Barthélemy Island While Celebrating Teammate’s Upcoming Wedding

A trip meant to celebrate love and friendship ended in unimaginable heartbreak earlier this month when Makenzi Kern, a 26-year-old former Iowa State University cheerleader, passed away unexpectedly on the Caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy.

Kern was part of a close-knit group of women who had traveled to St. Barts to celebrate Jade Jones, the fiancée of Indiana Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton, ahead of her wedding.

The group had embarked on what friends described as a dream getaway, full of laughter, sunshine, and the kind of memories that were supposed to last a lifetime.

Tragically, the celebration took a devastating turn when Kern suffered sudden health complications that claimed her life on June 8, just two days after she had celebrated her 26th birthday.

Her family has since come forward to share that they do not believe foul play, drugs, or alcohol had anything to do with her passing.

While the exact medical cause of her death has not been publicly disclosed, those closest to Kern are focused on honoring her memory rather than dwelling on the unanswered questions that remain.

Beloved Friend Who Lit Up Every Room She Entered

People who knew Makenzi Kern described her as the kind of person who made everyone around her feel at ease. Her obituary painted a picture of a young woman full of life, humor, and genuine warmth.

She was remembered as a goofy and lighthearted spirit who had a rare gift for lifting the mood of any room she walked into. Friends say she brought laughter wherever she went and never failed to make the people around her feel seen and valued.

Kern and Jones had built their friendship through years of shared experience on the Iowa State cheerleading squad.

The two remained close long after their college days ended, and Kern’s place in Jones’ bridal party spoke to just how meaningful that bond had become. It was during their time at Iowa State that Jones also met Haliburton, who went on to become one of the NBA’s most exciting players after being drafted in 2020.

Before the tragedy unfolded, Jones had posted photos from the trip on social media, writing that the group had hopped on a flight to Cloud 9. Kern appeared in multiple group photos from the island, smiling broadly alongside her closest friends, unaware that those carefree moments would be among her last.

The news of her death spread quickly and struck a deep chord with those who had known her throughout her life. Her family is described as absolutely devastated, leaning on one another as they process a loss that came far too soon and without any warning.

Haliburton, Jones, and the rest of the wedding party have not yet spoken publicly about Kern’s passing. The silence is understandable given the weight of what they are all carrying.

Makenzi Kern was 26 years old. She is gone far too soon, but those who loved her will carry her spirit forward in everything they do.
