Former JMU Dukes Football Star Lucas (Luke) Warner Dead at a Young Age, Leaves Behind Wife Karina

Lucas “Luke” Warner, a former James Madison University football standout, has passed away following a car accident, leaving behind a grieving community of teammates, friends, and his newlywed wife, Karina.

The news spread rapidly across social media Thursday morning, with tributes pouring in from former JMU players, fans, and those who had the privilege of knowing him personally.

Warner graduated from JMU in 2022 and had been a part of the Dukes football program during the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Before arriving in Harrisonburg, he spent three years as a starter at Charlotte Christian in his home state of North Carolina, where he built the foundation that would carry him to one of the top FCS programs in the country.

His time at JMU coincided with one of the program’s most exciting eras. Warner was part of the 2019 squad that won the Colonial Athletic Association championship and fought their way to the FCS National Championship game against North Dakota State.

For anyone connected to JMU football, that season holds a special place, and Warner was one of the young men who helped make it happen. He wore the purple and gold with pride and left his mark on a program known for producing not just talented athletes but quality people.

The Man Behind the Jersey

What stood out most in the wake of his passing was not the football accolades but the overwhelming consensus about who Luke Warner was as a human being. Friend after friend described him in nearly identical terms. Joyful. Positive.

Someone who made others feel good just by being around him. Former teammate Jack Brigham wrote online that Warner was “nothing but a positive and great person to everyone he encountered.” Another friend called him “Luke the Duke” and remembered him as someone who was always full of life.

His former JMU teammate, Isaac Ukwu, shared a photo on Instagram of the two of them together in a gym, both in purple Dukes Football shirts, both laughing.

Above the photo, Ukwu placed a dove and a prayer hands emoji. Below it, the words: “Brought joy and laughs to everyone around him.” Few tributes have said more with less.

After his playing career ended, Warner settled in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he built a life with his wife, Karina. The two had just celebrated their wedding reception roughly eight weeks before his death, sharing photos online that drew dozens of warm and joyful comments from people who loved them both.

Warner himself had replied to the comments with genuine emotion, writing that seeing the love from friends and family had him smiling at his phone. It was a snapshot of a man fully present in a happy chapter of his life, surrounded by people who cared about him deeply.

Luke Warner was a JMU football alumnus, a North Carolina native, a newlywed, and by every account a genuinely good person. He is survived by his wife, Karina. The JMU community and everyone who crossed his path are mourning a life taken far too soon.
