Former UW-Stout Student Mason Barth Dies in an Accidental Death Investigation

A former University of Wisconsin-Stout student was found dead on campus Sunday morning, and police are now working to determine exactly what led to the young man’s death.

Mason Douglas Barth was discovered near Bowman Hall on the UW-Stout campus in Menomonie at approximately 9 a.m. on May 3, 2026.

He was identified by university police shortly after officers arrived at the scene.

According to the UW-Stout Police Department, Barth was not a current member of the university community at the time of his death, though Police Chief Greg Kalosis confirmed that he had been enrolled as a student at UW-Stout back in 2020 and did not graduate from the institution.

The discovery prompted an immediate response from multiple agencies. Officers from both the UW-Stout Police Department and the Menomonie Police Department were dispatched to the scene.

The Menomonie Fire Department also responded, along with other municipal services.

Because the incident occurred on university property, UW-Stout Police are leading the investigation, with the Menomonie Police Department working alongside them in a collaborative capacity.

From the outset, authorities have been clear about their current assessment of the situation. Investigators do not believe the death is suspicious in nature and are treating it as an accident.

That classification, while offering some initial clarity, still leaves many questions unanswered as the investigation continues.

Chief Kalosis noted that the Dunn County Medical Examiner’s Office has already conducted testing, including toxicology work, and submitted those results to a state laboratory for further analysis.

Police are now waiting on those findings before making any official determination about the precise cause of death.

Toxicology results can often take weeks or even months to come back from state labs, meaning the final answers may still be some time away for Barth’s family and those who knew him.

Bowman Hall sits on the main UW-Stout campus and houses several departments and academic programs.

The area around the building would typically see foot traffic from students, faculty, and staff during a normal weekday, though Sunday mornings tend to be quieter across most university grounds. It remains unclear how long Barth had been at the location before he was found.

The university has not issued a formal statement about any plans for grief support or counseling resources for students or community members affected by the news, though incidents like this on college campuses often prompt institutions to make those services available in the days that follow.

Olson Funeral Home in the area is working with Barth’s family to arrange funeral services. No details about those services have been made publicly available at this time.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. While the accidental classification suggests investigators do not believe foul play was involved, the official cause of death will not be confirmed until the state lab returns its findings and a full review of the evidence is complete.

For now, the community around Menomonie and the broader UW-Stout network is left waiting for more information about a young man whose life ended far too soon under circumstances that are still being pieced together by the agencies working the case.
