The small towns of Kiefer and Beggs, Oklahoma, are coming together to grieve the loss of Talan Chesser, a recent Kiefer High School graduate who died Wednesday morning after being involved in a car accident while returning home from a family vacation.
Talan had just walked the stage at graduation and was looking ahead to the next chapter of his life. Those who knew him describe a young man whose warmth and selflessness left a mark on everyone he met.
He was an active member of Kiefer FFA and had recently earned his State FFA Degree, a distinction that reflects years of dedication to the program. He was also part of the Kiefer Trojans basketball program, where coaches and teammates say he made the people around him better, both as a player and as a friend.
News On 6 reported that grief counselors were made available Thursday morning in Kiefer’s agriculture building so students and staff could begin processing the tragedy together.
The Kiefer Trojans Men’s Basketball program also shared a tribute online, noting that Talan’s character and outgoing personality were just a few of the qualities that made him stand out during his time as a Trojan.
Others involved in the same crash, including Lexi Rowe and members of Talan’s own family, survived but suffered injuries and now face a long road to recovery.
While grateful to have survived, they are contending with physical pain, ongoing medical treatment, and the emotional weight that follows such a sudden and tragic loss.
Family launches fundraiser to ease financial burden
In the wake of the accident, family friend Cheyenne Olsen of Kiefer started a GoFundMe campaign titled “Support After a Tragedy” to help the Chesser family manage the unexpected costs that come with this kind of loss.
The fundraiser is intended to cover funeral and memorial expenses for Talan, along with medical bills and recovery-related costs for those who were injured.
As of this report, the campaign had raised over sixteen thousand dollars toward a twenty-thousand-dollar goal, with more than 140 donations from family, friends, and members of the wider community.
Among the contributions was a one-thousand-dollar gift from Kelly Hunter, marking the largest single donation so far.
The organizer described the loss as leaving an unimaginable void in the hearts of everyone who knew Talan, and asked supporters to keep the family in their prayers during what she called an incredibly difficult time.
Members of the community have flooded social media with messages of support for Talan’s mother, Nichole Chesser, and the rest of the family.
Friends and relatives, including Gina Patrick and Stephanie Rake, shared posts expressing heartbreak and asking others to pray for the family as they navigate the days and weeks ahead.
One relative, identified online as a cousin of Nichole’s, wrote that Talan was a great kid and asked the community to continue holding the family close in thought.
As the Chesser family begins the painful process of saying goodbye, neighbors across Kiefer and Beggs say they intend to keep showing up, through donations, prayers, and simple acts of kindness, for as long as it takes.
