A 40-year-old Monroe man died Wednesday night after a crash involving four vehicles, one of them his motorcycle, in the town of Matthews. Police have identified the victim as Jonathan Tyler Hill.
According to the Matthews Police Department, officers were called out around 9:34 p.m. on July 1 to the intersection of East John Street and McKee Road after reports came in of a crash with injuries.
When crews arrived, they found that four vehicles were involved, including the motorcycle Hill had been riding.
Matthews Fire and EMS crews worked to save Hill at the scene, but he was pronounced dead there. A second person involved in the crash was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Road Closed for Hours Following Crash
The crash forced officials to shut down East John Street between McKee Road and Interstate 485. That closure began around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday and lasted until roughly 1:07 a.m. Thursday, as crews worked to clear the scene and investigators documented what happened.
The Matthews Police Department says the investigation into the deadly crash is still active. No further details have been released about what led up to the collision, including which vehicle or driver may have caused it. Police have not said whether any charges are expected as the case moves forward.
Matthews sits just southeast of Charlotte and is part of the larger Charlotte metro area, where roads like McKee Road and I-485 see heavy evening traffic.
Crashes involving motorcycles tend to be especially dangerous because riders have far less protection than someone inside a car or truck, something safety officials in the region have pointed to repeatedly after past wrecks.
Hill’s death adds to a string of recent traffic fatalities across the Charlotte area that have drawn attention from local news outlets in the past week. Reports have also covered a separate deadly crash on Statesville Road in north Charlotte, along with another case involving a person struck and killed while walking near a road in the region.
Together, these incidents have renewed conversation among residents and local leaders about road safety heading into the holiday weekend, as families travel more often for Fourth of July gatherings.
Anyone with information about the Matthews crash is encouraged to reach out to the Matthews Police Department as the investigation continues. Officials have not indicated when the inquiry might conclude or when additional details about the other vehicles and drivers involved will be made public.
