Menifee, CA, Air Quality Alert Issued as Pipeline Fire Smoke Drifts Inland

The Pipeline Fire burning on Camp Pendleton has now scorched more than 1,065 acres with zero containment, keeping mandatory evacuations in place and blanketing North County San Diego, Fallbrook, Bonsall, and Menifee under heavy smoke.

The fire broke out Monday around 2:10 p.m. near Range 501 and Edson Range, close to Stuart Mesa Road and Hammond Drive on the Marine Corps base.

What began as roughly 5 acres in light vegetation exploded through the afternoon and evening, jumping from 30 acres by 3 p.m. to 180 acres by 4 p.m., then to 900 acres by 5:45 p.m. The brush fire has now burned at least 1,065 acres, according to NBC 7 San Diego.

Marine Corps officials ordered mandatory evacuations for the base’s 32 Area and 33 Area as the flames moved at what was described as a critical rate of spread, with an immediate threat to structures. The evacuation order for 33 Area was later lifted around 8:27 p.m. Monday, though the order for 32 Area remains in effect. Paige Field House is serving as the Evacuation Control Center for personnel displaced by the mandatory order.

Firefighting crews and aircraft battle a blaze through the night as smoke spreads regionwide

Camp Pendleton Fire and Emergency Services has continued responding around the clock, with CAL FIRE listing the fire’s cause as under investigation and containment still at zero percent as of Monday evening.

Firefighting aircraft, including night-flying helicopters, have worked to protect critical infrastructure, while multiple mutual-aid resources, including CAL FIRE personnel and equipment, have been integrated into suppression operations, with CAL FIRE also supporting Incident Command staff. Fire retardant has been dropped around several areas of the fire to slow its advance.

The Camp Pendleton Regional Defense Operations Center remains activated to coordinate installation support for the Incident Commander and emergency responders. Officials continue to urge personnel and the public to avoid the affected area and follow directions from emergency crews.

Smoke from the blaze has drifted far beyond the base itself. The San Diego County Air Pollution Control District issued an active smoke advisory covering communities around Fallbrook, Pala, Valley Center, and Oceanside.

Farther inland, Menifee and much of southwest Riverside County were also blanketed in thick haze Monday evening, prompting the South Coast Air Quality Management District to issue an Air Quality Alert for elevated fine particle pollution across the region.

Residents in affected communities are advised to keep windows closed, limit outdoor activity, and monitor local air quality updates as firefighting operations continue. This remains a developing situation, with conditions expected to change as crews work through the overnight hours to gain containment.
