A Genesee County couple now faces serious criminal charges following the death of their 7-year-old son, who authorities say weighed 255 pounds at the time he died.
Damien and Jessica O’Brien have been charged with second-degree murder, torture, and several counts of child abuse, according to a complaint filed by the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office.
Investigation Reveals Disturbing Details
Prosecutors say the couple caused serious physical harm to their young son, who was reportedly unable to move on his own due to his weight. Officials allege the parents failed to seek medical care for the boy and did not provide him with a safe living environment in the time leading up to his death.
Law enforcement opened an investigation into the O’Briens on November 4, 2025, though the case has only recently resulted in formal charges. Authorities have not released extensive details about what prompted the initial investigation, but the case has drawn significant attention due to the severity of the allegations.
Court documents also reveal that the couple faces an additional charge of second-degree child abuse involving another child in the household, a 5-year-old girl.
According to the complaint, this child was also found to be morbidly obese. Investigators say she was discovered outside the family’s home in a troubling condition. She was reportedly naked, dirty, and had knots in her hair when officers found her.
Couple Could Face Life in Prison
Given the severity of the charges, both Damien and Jessica O’Brien could face life in prison if they are convicted. The combination of murder and torture charges signals that prosecutors view this as an extreme case of parental neglect and abuse, rather than simple oversight or poor judgment.
Cases involving child neglect tied to extreme weight gain are exceptionally rare and tend to raise difficult questions for investigators and medical examiners alike.
Determining whether a child’s weight was the direct result of abuse, neglect, or an underlying medical condition often requires extensive forensic and medical analysis. In this case, prosecutors appear to believe the evidence points clearly toward intentional harm and a pattern of neglect rather than an isolated failure to manage a child’s health.
The discovery of a second child in the home, also reportedly suffering from severe obesity and found in a concerning physical condition, adds another layer of seriousness to the case.
Her presence outside the home, unclothed and apparently uncared for, suggests investigators may be looking closely at the overall conditions inside the household and whether both children were subjected to long-term neglect.
As the case moves through the legal system, more details are likely to emerge about the timeline of events, the medical evidence gathered, and the specific circumstances that led investigators to pursue murder and torture charges rather than lesser counts.
For now, the O’Briens remain in custody as they await further court proceedings, with the community watching closely as the case unfolds.
