Richmond, IL: John Ethan Regan-Langrick, 18, Dies After High-Speed Crash with SUV Towing Camper

An 18-year-old man from Spring Grove has died days after a violent crash in downtown Richmond that happened when he allegedly sped into oncoming traffic and slammed into an SUV towing a camper.

John Ethan Regan-Langrick was identified by the Lake County Coroner’s Office as the driver involved in the Sunday night collision. He was flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, a Level 1 trauma center, and remained in the intensive care unit before he was pronounced dead on Monday. Investigators say his death was caused by complications from blunt force injuries suffered in the crash.

How the Crash Unfolded

According to Richmond Police Chief Ciro Cetrangolo, an officer was in the middle of an unrelated traffic stop around 7:37 p.m. Sunday when he spotted a silver Toyota Corolla racing west on Route 173, driving in the wrong lane of traffic. Witnesses and police radio traffic indicated the car was moving at roughly 100 miles per hour in a zone posted for 35.

Moments later, that same officer came upon a serious two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 173 and Route 12. The Toyota had struck a 2021 Nissan Armada that was towing a camper trailer. The impact was strong enough to tear the camper loose from its frame, sending it into the southbound lanes of Route 12.

Preliminary findings indicate that speed was a major contributing factor in the crash, officials said.

Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles and had to be freed by firefighter medics from the Richmond Township Fire Protection District. The woman driving the Nissan was taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. Regan-Langrick was flown from the scene by LifeNet 3-1, a medical helicopter based in McHenry, after being transported briefly to a nearby fire station.

Bystanders played a key role in the aftermath. A worker at a cafe near the intersection said he heard what sounded like an explosion and ran outside with a fire extinguisher after seeing flames coming from the Toyota’s engine area. He and another passerby worked to put out the fire while others checked on the injured driver, who was reportedly still breathing.

Police thanked the good Samaritans who stopped to help before emergency crews arrived on scene.

The crash caused significant damage beyond the vehicles involved. A nearby business, Value Discount Flooring, and a utility pole were also damaged in the wreck. Crews spent hours clearing debris, and all directions of the intersection were shut down into the early morning as the McHenry County Major Crash Assistance Team worked to reconstruct what happened.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and officials say more details will be released once that work is complete.
